Locale

What Is locale?

A locale file allows merchants to translate their product information using a set of translated text strings that are available in multiple languages, such as English, Spanish, Italian, etc. You can leverage a locale file to translate any type of content displayed in your storefront.

How Does Locale Work?

Typically, a locale has identifier codes that automatically pick up the local language based on the country of the region’s code. The file then sets a parameter to define the language to display, as well as any other preference that the user might want to view from their interface.

What Are The Benefits of Locale?

Locale settings are critical for any business that wants to expand its operations in overseas markets. With an app locale setting, you can increase market visibility to stimulate international sales across multiple channels.

This setting is also ideal for targeting new demographics as it gives you a competitive edge by offering personalized services. Moreover, displaying prices and product information in local languages means you can minimize the need and costs of on-site customer service.

What Is Basic Organizational Structure of Locale Files?

Locale applications follow a schema naming structure with a standard organizational structure. This includes the Category structure, which features the top-level segment of your files.

The other structure includes the Group, which segments the categories. Lastly, we have the description level which highlights specific translations.

What Are The Examples of Locale Files Names?

The files belong to the IETF system which designates the first lowercase letter to stand for the language code, while the second uppercase letter is designated to stand for the region code.

Examples of these name files include:

  • en-GB.json to represent the English language and the Britain region;
  • and es-ES.json to represent the Spanish language and the Spain region.
